On April 10-11th, we celebrated National Poetry Month with a marathon reading of the epic Anglo-Saxon poem “Beowulf”. We were joined by Los Gatos Poet Laureate Erica Goss, the Friends, and other town luminaries as we read OUT LOUD!
“Beowulf” is the oldest surviving epic poem of Old English, and also the earliest vernacular English literature. Written by an unknown poet in England between the 8th and 11th centuries, this epic poem is set in Scandinavia and describes the heroic acts of Beowulf, who came to the aid of the Danes to battle the terrible monster Grendel.
